7th Banstead Go Down the Mines!
CAVING in Merstham – what a great experience!
The 7th Banstead Scouts recently headed off down Merstham mines. One of the Scouts, Malachai, takes up the story…
“It used to be an old quarry and we got to visit places where families worked together to cut stone out to sell. Wellies were essential as it had rained and there were puddles and some slippery mud. We had to climb through small gaps to get to big places.
At one point there was a lot of water to slush through. It was really dark and we wore our head torches, thankfully, because when we switched our torches off, it was pitch black and impossible for our eyes to adjust to this much darkness.
There was a really beautiful display of stalactites and stalagmites. That was my favourite bit!
I was thrilled to be able to do this. I definitely want to go again!”
